What’s In Your Energy Drink?

Posted in Health Quotes by Aidan Cassell on April 2, 2011 No Comments yet

In recent years energy drinks have become increasingly common.  Not only this, but their ingredient lists are becoming ever more complex.  Caffeine and sugar are no longer the only things providing energy drink users with a quick pick me up.  Today there are a host of other energy enhancing ingredients on the menu. The latest energy drinks go far beyond the traditional sucrose and caffeine rush.  Today energy drinks also contain a variety of other ingredients such as green tea, ginseng, yerba mate, milk thistle and k biloba.  These alternative energy enhancers all work in varying ways to help increase the body’s energy levels and stores.  Some of the most common are analyzed below.Green tea: Green tea is frequently seen now in energy drinks because it is a natural source of caffeine.  Not only this, but it is also highly beneficial too.  Green tea is a terrific antioxidant and cancer prevention extract.  Moreover it is a metabolic rate booster and fat oxidizer.  Green tea raises the body’s core temperature thereby promoting the process of thermogenesis.  Calories are burned faster thereby making weight loss much easier.Vitamin B: Vitamin Bs are also now commonly found in energy drinks.  The B vitamins are all important for energy.  Vitamin B6 for instance, functions to help with enzyme reactions which are themselves essential to metabolizing amino acids and other proteins.Vitamin B12 is known for its energy enhancing effects and is also a powerful metabolic function regulator.  Vitamin B1 helps the body to convert blood sugar into energy and can therefore help with endurance and stamina.Taurine:  Taurine is another ingredient found now in energy drinks.  Taurine is an amino acid that can help to increase energy levels in the body.  Taurine with caffeine has been thought to increase the buzz from regular caffeine.  In some studies it has also been found to improve performance among athletes.  Finally, taurine is also a metabolic booster.L-Carnitine is another important energy drink ingredient.  L-Carnitine helps to supply the organs of the body including the heart, muscles, liver and immune cells with energy.  It is vital to the production of energy, taking fat and transmuting it.  L-Carnitine can help with athletic performance, endurance and help with post exercise recovery.  L-Carnitine has been said to help prevent fatigue during strenuous exercise and training regimens. These new ingredients have made energy drinks much more scientifically and more complete sources than they were in the past.  Energy drinks are now an essential aspect of sports nutrition and health supplementation.

Choosing your Yoga Essentials

Posted in Health Quotes by Aidan Cassell on March 27, 2011 No Comments yet

When beginning any new fitness activity there may be some essentials that you will need to purchase before beginning.  If you are new to yoga you will want to consider some of the following points before choosing the kind of equipment and attire you will need.  Below are some of the considerations those new to yoga should look at before purchasing any yoga supplies.Choosing a yoga mat-Yoga mats are essential pieces to any yoga practice.  While many yoga studios rent out mats, purchasing your own is really a much better idea, especially if you are planning on engaging in yoga practice on a regular or semi-regular basis.  Yoga mats come in different shapes and consistencies so choosing the right one for you can depend on a couple of factors.First off, what kind of yoga are you planning on engaging in?  The most basic mats are designed for Hatha yoga, a yoga that is somewhat slower than other varieties.  These mats come in a variety of sizes and colours so chose one depending on your taste. If you are planning on engaging in a more intense yoga like Ashtanga yoga you will want to look for a more durable mat with better padding.  Also if you are planning on practicing every day, you would do well to spend a little more and buy a better quality mat.  Standard mats are usually at least 4 mm thick.  Some yogis who practice power yoga or Ashtanga actually use a rug instead of a mat, because of the extent of perspiration that this kind of yoga entails.  You probably won’t need this though so stick with the regular mats.
