E-cigarettes buzz, light up with friends nearby
You go to a restaurant, they hand you a pager and you wait until it buzzes and lights up. Now an electronic cigarette company has taken that concept and given it a new twist in what’s becoming the newest social networking tool.
Instead of tobacco, e-cigarette users puff on a plastic tube equipped with a liquid vapor cartridge and flavored nicotine. But what sets Blu Cigs apart is that it’s the only e-cigarette with its very own social network.
“When the pack identifies somebody, the blue logo will flash and the pack will vibrate, and at that stage they’re exchanging information that identifies other Blu users within 50 feet of you whether it be in a bar, work,” said Blu Cigs CEO Jason Healy.
Users will soon be able to upload a profile to their pack, kind of like Facebook.
“We want to keep on growing it, said Healy. “The next stage is that it talks to your phone.”
There’s still that elephant in the room — are they safe or at least safer than traditional cigarettes? “Well, we don’t necessarily say safer,” said Dr. Carmine Dalto. “So consumers are able to educate themselves.” Health experts say the upside is that e-cigarettes don’t have tar and additives and could be a way to wean off the real things. “The main thing is if it’s something that will help you quit smoking or you feel you could use it successfully, then great,” said Dr. Dalto. A small study in Italy showed that e-cigarettes can help smokers kick the habit. However, they still contain nicotine and there is concern they could be a gateway to tobacco for young people.
