Container Garden Update: First Pepper and More Broccoli

If youre new around here, you might wonder whats up with this whole Grow Your Own Food Challenge. Heres the lowdown: I am a terrible gardener. Really. I kill plants, and its kept me from trying to grow food for a couple of years after a particularly disastrous attempt. This time around, Im making myself accountable to my plants and to you guys, and Im inviting anyone who likes to join in on growing some food! It doesnt have to be a lot of food. The idea is to just keep some plants alive to sort of ease into the whole thing. If youre growing food or planning to and want to get in on the challenge, I hope youll keep us updated! Feel free to comment on this or any other GYOFC post or shoot me an email through the contact page.
My husband has been kind enough to toss some organic plant food into my pots out front when he tends to his plants in the back yard, and I think thats part of why my garden is doing so much better than in past years. I need to find some time to dig into our compost bin to amend the soil in the pots some more, especially the mint which took a beating in the recent storms. If youre looking to amend your edible container garden with compost, Mike at Urban Organic Gardener has some really great tips on doing just that!
My pepper plant produced its very first hot pepper (pictured above), which Im going to harvest and cook up very soon, and these lovely flowers seem to imply that more are on the way!

Something is still munching the leaves, but since whatever it is doesnt seem to be keeping the plant from producing, Im going to just wait and see.

Project: Broccoli Beheading was a success again, as well! I dont know how many times the plant will bounce back from beheadings (do any of you know?), but Im going to just keep harvesting it this way until it refuses to feed me delicious Chinese broccoli anymore. If it aint broke, right?
