Regular Heavy Drinking May Make You Permanently Wobbly

When youre drunk, one of the first things to go is steadiness and balance. Thats why police officers test drivers to see if they can walk in a straight line. But what if balance issues were permanent? What if heavy drinking causes your wobbly gait to last?

A new study reported on , found just that.

According to :

Researchers at Neurobehavioral Research Inc., in Honolulu, compared the balance abilities and gaits of diagnosed alcoholics who had been sober for several weeks, those who had been sober for an average of seven years, and people with no history of alcohol dependence.

Participants took tests that were similar to field sobriety tests.

Again, :

Of the more than 200 volunteers, the 70 recently sober ones who had not had alcohol for six to 15 weeks performed the worst. But in tasks with their eyes closed, the 82 long-sober volunteers also performed noticeably worse than the 52 people who had never been alcoholics. (The researchers controlled for the effect of age on balance.)

While you get about 80 to 90 percent of coordination back, you dont get it all. This, according to experts, is the result of damage to the brains cerebellum. It should be noted that by heavy drinking, researchers are referring to those who drank heavily regularly and not just the general population who indulge too much once in a while.
